How to Choose the Right UnCruise Alaska Itinerary

At UnCruise Adventures, we offer nine core Alaska itineraries. Each is designed to get you deep into Alaska's remote wilderness, creating experiences you won’t get with any other cruise line. In addition to these core itineraries, we also offer themed cruises that are variations of the original routes. These focus on specific interests, like family activities and photography instruction.

With so many incredible options, it can be difficult to choose the perfect UnCruise. Do you want to spot as many animal species as possible? Are you looking for vigorous adventures like bushwhacking through dense forests? Or perhaps you want to take your children on their first ever paddle?

In this blog, we’ll break down the key differences between all our Alaska itineraries to help you find the adventure that’s right for you.

For the Active Adventurer

Our mission is to get guests into the heart of Alaska, rather than just sightseeing from a crowded deck. Therefore, all our itineraries offer a wide array of adventure activities, whether it’s kayaking through bergy bits in Prince William Sound to bushwhacking through the Tongass National Forest.

With that being said, a few of our itineraries offer slightly more vigorous activities than others. If you’re an adventure enthusiast looking to be as active as possible in the Alaskan backcountry, then these are the best options for you.

Wild, Woolly, and Wow with Glacier Bay: This is the most active itinerary we offer. The Wilderness Legacy opts for exploration in the Glacier Bay Outer Bay. Because of this, there are less restrictions on where we can take our guests. You will explore places in this region that 99% of Glacier Bay visitors never go to, including hiking in the expansive outwash field of glaciers winding down the Fairweather Mountain Range. You’ll also have the chance to snorkel in Alaska’s chilly waters, but don’t worry; wetsuits will be provided onboard. If you’ve snorkeled on one of our warm weather itineraries, this will be a whole new experience. You will search for crustaceans, salmon, sea anemones, and more.

Northern Passages with Glacier Bay & Sitka: This is our only itinerary that visits Sitka and the surrounding area. Sitka only has about 14 miles of road; after that, exploration can only happen by boat or on foot. That means prime kayaking, hiking, and off-the-grid adventure. Baranof Island is steep and forested, making this itinerary a favorite for all-day “yak-and-wack” outings with our most active guests. Alaska’s Fjords & Glaciers with Ketchikan: This itinerary sails further south in Alaska’s Inside Passage than most of our others because it embarks or disembarks in Ketchikan. You will visit Misty Fjords National Monument, often referred to as the “Yosemite of the North.” There will be amazing opportunities for paddling in protected waters. The area this route sails also features a lot of old logging roads, creating great hiking paths to explore the surrounding wilderness.

For the Wildlife Lover

When most people think of Alaska, they picture grizzly bears, moose, whales, and other wildlife species that are rare in the continental United States. And they’re absolutely right! Alaska is home to some of the most wildlife-rich regions in the world. From the dense forests in Southeast Alaska to the icy fjords of Glacier Bay National Park, every one of our itineraries offers the opportunity to encounter wildlife. There is one itinerary that stands out in this regard:

Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise with 2 Days in Glacier Bay: This itinerary packs in a remarkable variety of wildlife habitats in just eight days. You’ll start in Frederick Sound, known for frequent humpback whale sightings. Next, explore Chichagof Island, which has the highest population of brown bears per square mile on Earth (this translates to nearly 1,550 bears!). Finally, venture deep into Glacier Bay National Park, home to over 280 bird species and more than 8,000 sea otters. With numbers like these, your chances of epic wildlife encounters are extremely high.

Remember though, wildlife sightings are common on all of our itineraries. UnCruise itineraries are flexible and may adapt based on weather conditions or wildlife sightings. Your captain and crew will go above and beyond to ensure you have the best possible wildlife encounters throughout your journey.

For Families

If you’re looking to bring your little adventurers to Alaska, we offer a themed cruise perfect for you:

Kids in Nature: Wild, Woolly, and Wow with Glacier Bay: This kid-friendly itinerary offers the perfect opportunity to explore Alaska's backcountry with the entire family. On this special sailing, our minimum age limit is waived—we welcome children of all ages to join in the adventure. Forget the crowds, the lines, and the fast pace of theme parks and resorts. This is a family adventure where the only rush is to spot a breaching whale or playful bear cubs. Watch your kids make friends, learn new activities, and experience the world in a whole new way. Because this themed cruise is specifically designed to cater towards families, we offer a variety of special activities. These include Junior Ranger books, kayak races, kids-only tours, scavenger hunts, science labs, evening kids' hour with the guides, bonfires on the beach, and more.

For the Solo Traveler

Alaska is an incredible place to travel solo, and small-ship cruising makes it even easier. At UnCruise, camaraderie is part of the experience. You’ll hike, kayak, and explore in small groups, naturally connecting with like-minded travelers along the way. After a full day of adventure, everyone gathers back onboard to swap stories over dinner, reliving the whale sightings and muddy bushwhacks together. Many of our solo travelers come seeking adventure and leave with not only that, but a handful of new friends to stay in touch with long after the trip ends.

Glacier Bay Adventure Cruise with 2 Days in Glacier Bay: This itinerary is a favorite for solo travelers who want rangeSailing aboard our mid-size ships (60–76 guests), it offers the perfect balance: enough fellow travelers to create energy and connection, but small enough that you’ll never feel lost in the crowd. By day two, you’ll recognize faces and know your guides by name. Think of this as the perfect Alaska sampler, offering glaciers, wildlife, hikes, skiff tours, and more. You’re never “stuck” in one activity style. If you’re feeling social, join a group hike. Want something quieter? Grab a kayak and paddle at your own pace. If you opt to sail aboard the Wilderness Adventurer, we even offer a Compass cabin, which is designed specifically for solo travelers and offers lower pricing.

For the Photographer

Alaska is hard to beat if you love having a camera in your hands. The landscapes are vast, and wildlife shows up when you least expect it. Every itinerary offers strong photo opportunities, but one route tends to rise to the top for serious photographers.

Alaska’s Glacier Wilderness with Glacier Bay: This itinerary sails aboard the Safari Quest, our smallest vessel, with just 22 guests. That alone makes a big difference. Fewer people means more room and better access when setting up a tripod or long lens. It’s also about where this ship can go. The Safari Quest accesses remote wilderness areas even other UnCruise vessels can’t reach. Exploring along the ABC Islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof) puts you in some of the most wildlife-rich areas in Southeast Alaska, especially for brown bears. The pace of this itinerary also helps. With a small group and flexible expedition style, there’s more ability to linger when wildlife is active. For photographers, that time and flexibility matter. If your priority is access, space, and strong wildlife potential, this is the itinerary that consistently delivers.
