Where are the Aleutian Islands?
The Aleutian Islands stretch across Southwest Alaska, extending from the Alaska Peninsula westward to Attu Island. Our 10-night expedition travels between Seward and Unalaska, with departures available in either direction. Unalaska is also home to Dutch Harbor, one of the busiest fishing ports in the United States and a familiar location to fans of Deadliest Catch, where it serves as a major hub for Alaska’s crab fishing fleet.
For guests embarking in Unalaska, we recommend arriving a few days early to explore the area and build in some flexibility before your expedition begins. Given Unalaska’s remote location, flight delays and cancellations are not uncommon, so arriving early helps ensure you’re there and ready to board when your adventure begins.
What makes the Aleutian Islands unique?
The Aleutian Islands are unique in countless ways, but their landscapes are among the most striking. Across the archipelago, rocky shores quickly ascend into massive mountains, creating a dramatic meeting point between land and sea. Tectonic activity has shaped the landscape for millions of years, and many of the Aleutians’ volcanoes are still active today.
Unlike Southeast Alaska, many of the Aleutian Islands are almost completely devoid of trees. Instead, the islands are covered in grasses, wildflowers, and low-growing vegetation adapted to the region’s harsh climate. With few trees or other obstacles, the mountains and wide-open landscapes feel even more immense.
The weather is another defining feature of the Aleutians. Wind, fog, rain, and sunshine can all roll through within the same day, constantly changing the landscape and conditions around you. It’s a rugged environment where nature sets the pace. Lastly, what makes the Aleutians most unique is how remote they are. Many of the islands have little to no permanent human presence, meaning it’s possible to explore places where there are no roads, towns, or other signs of civilization for miles. Our guests even get the opportunity to explore a ghost town on Unga Island, which has been uncivilized since 1969.
What wildlife will I see in the Aleutian Islands?
The Aleutian Islands are home to an incredible abundance of wildlife, but the birdlife is especially impressive. The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge is estimated to support more than 40 million seabirds, making the region one of the most remarkable birding destinations in the world. Cormorants, guillemots, oystercatchers, albatross, auklets, horned and tufted puffins, and countless other species can be found throughout the islands. If you’re a serious birder or wildlife photographer, the Aleutians are hard to beat.
Another wildlife highlight of this itinerary is Katmai National Park and Preserve, home to more than 2,000 brown bears. While we don’t visit the famous Brooks Falls, we do have access to another exceptional bear-viewing destination: Geographic Harbor. Here, guests and crew have had incredible encounters with brown bears and their cubs in a remote, wild setting. Visiting Katmai independently can be both expensive and logistically challenging, with limited lodging and transportation options. With UnCruise, you can spend the day exploring in search of bears before returning to the comfort of your ship in the evening.
The Aleutians are also home to an incredible variety of marine life. Humpback whales, orcas, and fin whales are frequently encountered throughout the region, while Steller sea lions and sea otters are regularly spotted from the ship. In Kenai Fjords National Park, guests may also spot harbor seals resting on icebergs around Northwestern Glacier. And beneath it all are the salmon runs that fuel this remarkable ecosystem, supporting the wildlife found throughout the region.
What is the history of the Aleutian Islands?
The Aleutian Islands have a long and fascinating history shaped by the people, explorers, fishermen, and military forces who have called this remote region home. The Unangan people have lived throughout the islands for thousands of years, developing communities and traditions deeply connected to the surrounding ocean and land.
Centuries later, Russian explorers and fur traders arrived in the Aleutians, followed by American settlers and fishermen. The region also played an important role during World War II, when the Aleutian Islands became the site of one of the few campaigns fought on American soil.
Today, the history of the Aleutians is still visible throughout the places we visit. Unalaska, where our expedition begins or ends, has a particularly rich history tied to fishing, the fur trade, Russian exploration, and World War II. Farther afield, guests may encounter historic sites, abandoned settlements, and other reminders of the people and events that shaped these remote islands.

But: the remoteness is real. The Aleutians are far from major cities and medical facilities, and access to hospitals requires significant travel. The voyage can also involve rough seas and long stretches of open water. If you are prone to severe seasickness or have serious medical concerns that could require immediate or specialized medical care, this may not be the right trip for you. Guests should be comfortable traveling in a remote environment where conditions and access to outside assistance are very different from a typical cruise.
