Meet Jeremiah Bullfrog - UnCruise Passengers in Hawaii Unite for Marine Conservation

In 2025. guests aboard UnCruise Adventures' Hawaiian Seascapes voyage embarked on more than just a journey through the Pacific; they became active participants in marine conservation. Moved by a presentation from Ed Lyman of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, the passengers collectively donated $940 to the sanctuary, adopting and naming a humpback whale "Jeremiah Bullfrog" in honor of their Expedition Leader, Jeremy Saenz.

The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, established in 1992, spans approximately 1,400 square miles of ocean surrounding the main Hawaiian Islands. This sanctuary serves as a critical breeding and calving ground for over half of the North Pacific humpback whale population during the winter months. Beyond humpbacks, the sanctuary is home to a diverse array of marine life, including dolphins, sea turtles, and coral reefs, all protected through collaborative efforts in research, education, and resource management.

A notable figure in these conservation efforts is Maria Harvey, a former UnCruise Adventures Expedition Leader who now serves as a Large Whale Resource Protection and Monitoring Specialist at the sanctuary. Maria often returns to the Safari Explorer to educate guests about whale entanglement and rescue operations. Reflecting on her work, Maria shared, "Every disentanglement is a race against time. Each successful rescue not only saves a whale but also provides invaluable data to prevent future entanglements. It's a testament to what we can achieve when science and community come together."

The sanctuary's entanglement response team has successfully freed numerous whales from life-threatening situations, highlighting the importance of ongoing vigilance and rapid response. These efforts are complemented by public education initiatives and community involvement, ensuring that both locals and visitors play a role in marine stewardship.

The collective action of the UnCruise passengers exemplifies the profound impact that informed and engaged travelers can have on conservation. Their contribution not only aids in the protection of humpback whales but also strengthens the partnership between tourism and environmental preservation.

For those inspired to contribute, the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary welcomes donations and volunteer support. Together, we can ensure that the majestic humpback whales continue to grace Hawaiian waters for generations to come.
